A quick, effective way for students to recall and understand what they know is to have them engage in a five-minute writing exercise. Quick Writes help students access their prior knowledge and discover what they already know about the text they are preparing to read. Be sure to monitor the effectiveness of this strategy by following up. Follow up may include random share-outs, pair share, random grading, etc. The teacher is actively engaged with the students during the writing time.
